Wing wizard Anthony Knockaert has been voted Albion’s player of the season.

The Frenchman was unveiled as the runaway winner of the fans’ poll at the annual awards dinner at the Amex last night.

Knockaert was crowned Championship player of the season by the Football League earlier this month.

His 15 goals, eight assists and dazzling of opposition defenders has been instrumental in Albion’s promotion to the Premier League.

Ex-England and Liverpool midfielder turned media pundit Jamie Redknapp has dubbed Knockaert the ‘Eden Hazard of the Championship’.

Knockaert is the first winger in nearly 40 years to be named Albion’s star performer. He polled 36 per cent of the votes to emulate Peter O’Sullivan in 1977-78.

Goalkeeper David Stockdale was runner-up on 22 per cent, central defender Lewis Dunk third on 19 per cent. Stockdale was third last year, when the award went to midfielder Beram Kayal.

Solly March completed a notable double for the wide men. The England under-21 international was picked by boss Chris Hughton and his coaching staff as young player of the season.

Hailsham-born March, 22, was turning out for Lewes as a teenager, six rungs below the Premier League. He has recovered from almost a year out with cruciate ligament damage to play a role in Albion’s return to the top flight for the first time in 34 years.

Steve Sidwell polled more than half of the votes to land goal of the season for his 50-yard strike at Bristol City in November, which was dedicated to Knockaert’s late father and inspiration Patrick.

Andrew Lock, son of road rage victim Don Lock, won the James Brynin fan of the season.

Danny Hemsley, from Albion In The Community’s amputee team, took the Sarah Watts Inspiration Award and long-journeying BTEC student Callum Ronald the AITC award.
