"He who is not everyday conquering some fear has not learned the secret of life." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Whether we like it or not, part of our identity is defined by what we do for a living. Letting that go without a clear idea of our new working identity can feel like going into freefall.

We give up other things too. Security and a regular income. A monthly salary is hugely addictive.

We may fail in our quest. We will make mistakes. Ignoring our fears isn't clever. They have something to tell us about where we are.

There is no point in making a big change if we turn into gibbering wrecks as a result. It's normal to feel fear. The trick is to work out which fears are worth paying attention to and which can managed and put aside to (you knew it was coming) - do it anyway!

"It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare, it is because we do not dare that they are difficult." - Seneca
