Plans to convert a restaurant into flats have been rejected.

The proposals to turn The China Palace in Chapel Road, Worthing, into 14 flats with an additional storey were submitted to Adur and Worthing Councils in 2022.

However, the council rejected this last week as it was "not satisfied that the necessary affordable housing contribution" could not be made on site as stated in the plans, which goes against the council's housing policy.

According to the proposals, the restaurant and HMO rooms on the first and second floor were set to be turned into 11 duplex flats.

A new storey was also going be added to the building to house three more flats, which developers said would not have been visible at street level.

Saville Architects, the agent acting on behalf of the applicant, said the homes would be a mix of one, two and three bedrooms.

They also said that the flats would be "bright and spacious" and that nine flats would have access to outdoor terraces to the rear of the building.

Bike stores were also proposed for inside the building.

The plans were rejected by Adur and Worthing Councils on April 22.
