Photographs show work to build a town’s second Lidl store progressing.

Scaffolding can be seen on the former Halfords unit at Downlands Retail Park in Worthing and the neighbouring unit, which was occupied by Bensons for Beds, as work is carried out to transform it into the supermarket.

The chain has another store in North Street, which will not be affected by the opening of the new site.

Lidl was given permission to convert the retail park units by Worthing Borough Council last July.

At the time of approval, the council said the new store would generate almost half of the energy it needs to operate from air-source heat pumps and solar panels on its entrance canopy.

Bird and bat boxes, bug hotels and hedgehog houses in the landscaped areas will be installed and the council said Lidl agreed to spend up to £75,000 helping to fund improvements to the Lyons Way junction to ease congestion and improve pedestrian links to the other retail units including Sainsbury's.

Lidl was approached to confirm when it plans to open the new store but did not reply.
