An Army regiment has visited a National Trust property for the first time in 50 years.

The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment visited Petworth Park, in Petworth, after carrying out their duties for the King’s coronation earlier this month.

They traditionally came to Petworth in the 19th and 20th centuries.

“We were delighted to welcome the Life Guards Squadron of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment to Petworth Park last week to enjoy some well-deserved rest and recreation following their recent coronation duties,” said Michael Cole, marketing and communications officer at Petworth House and Park.

“Petworth has a long association with the military, having been used for exercises, training and as a staging point throughout its history.

“The Household Cavalry were regular visitors in the 19th century, leaving their horses to graze in the parkland whilst they visited the nearby Horse Guards Inn at Tillington, named after them.

“It was a spectacular sight and a wonderful surprise for our visitors to see the cavalry riding around the park for the first time in over 50 years.

“It’s a tradition that goes back many years and one we hope to revive. The challenge for me was trying to outrun them around 700 acres of parkland so I could film them at all the best points.”
