Eastbourne Borough Council has passed a motion offering its ‘deepest condolences’ to the French people following the terrorist attack in Nice which killed 84 people.

The motion was agreed unanimously at last night’s Council meeting and is being conveyed in writing to the Mayor of Nice.

It was also decided to set up a book of condolence for the victims of the atrocity which was opened at the Town Hall today (Thursday).

The motion read: “Eastbourne Borough Council wishes to offer its deepest condolences and pays tribute to the people of France following the recent atrocity in Nice.

At this time, the Council reflects upon the ideas of liberté, égalité, and fraternité and the importance of promoting tolerance and acceptance within our communities. We stand together against attacks which are used to divide us and remember that what unites us is far stronger.

This council will do all within its power to ensure Eastbourne remains welcoming to all irrespective of racial or national origin, belief, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.

Our thoughts are with those affected by these acts, and we pay tribute to those lost.”

The Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Hearn, has sent a letter to the Mayor of Nice.

She said: “On behalf of the people of Eastbourne, I will be extending our heartfelt sympathy to the French people with them following this horrific act of violence.

“I will be letting him know about the motion and book of condolence, and that our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by the attack.”

The book of condolence is available for signing in the reception area of the Town Hall.
