Maria Caulfield, Member of Parliament for Lewes, today welcomed figures showing that the employment rate has reached a record high, with 31.7 million people in work, while the unemployment rate has fallen to its lowest in over a decade.

Welcoming the figures - which were released earlier today – the Lewes MP said “Todays employment figures show that because of the decisions we , the Conservatives, have taken over the past six years, the fundamentals of our economy are strong and will continue to be strong as we negotiate our departure from the European Union.”

“We’ve entered a period of significant change, but when it comes to our jobs market we’re in a position of strength, with over 2.6 million more people in work than there were in 2010, the number of workless households cut to an all-time low, 750,000 vacancies in the economy and wages rising too.”

“There is great news within the Lewes constituency too, with the total number of claimants (both Jobseeker's Allowance and Universal Credit) being 38 lower than in June 2015.”

“Our job now is to build on this success story to create a country that works for everyone, where people can benefit from the opportunities that are being created regardless of who they are or where they come from.”
