Commuters faced a nightmare journey this morning as the St Jude storm hit Sussex.

Network Rail said they had cleared more than 40 trees this morning as all services were cancelled.

At 8.30am a spokesman for First Capital Connnect, which runs services on the Brighton to London mainline, said: "We currently have no indication of when services will resume. We advise you not to attempt to travel."

On the roads, there were more than 125 trees down across the county resulting in road closures and delays including on the A23 and A259.

On the buses, fallen trees between Eastbourne and Seaford meant buses were unable to leave Eastbourne via their normal route.

Instead a direct and non-stop route to Brighton via the A27 was running.

Route 12/12A between Seaford Chyngton Estate and Brighton ran via Denton Corner, Beddingham and the Lewes By Pass due to high winds, and a shuttle service using single decks between Newhaven, North Peacehaven and Brighton.

On route 29 there was a fallen tree at Ridgewood so buses are diverting via the by pass.

A fallen tree on New Church Road in Hove meant routes 1/1A and 6 were operating via Portland Road.

And a fallen on tree on Freshfield Road meant services 81/81A were operating direct via Queens Park Road and not via Freshfield Road/Down Terrace.

But there was practically no disruptions at Gatwick Airport with most flights unaffected.
